Promoting success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) areas of study

DESCRIPTION

Scholarships are available to Hispanic American graduate students who will be enrolling for the first time as a fulltime student in a STEM related Master’s graduate program in Fall 2013. Scholarships may cover full tuition and fees for up to 36 graduate hours at UTPA depending on their student account with continued participation dependent on satisfactory performance in the graduate program. The scholarship is part of the “Promoting Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans” grant that was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to UTPA.

ELIGIBLE FIELDS OF STUDY

Scholarships will be awarded to graduate students studying in the following fields:

• Science
• Technology (Computer and Information Sciences)
• Engineering
• Math
• Psychology (Non-clinical)
• Psychology (Clinical-Thesis track)
• Sociology
• Economics

CRITERIA

Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, personal essay, financial need and letters of recommendation. Required criteria include:

• Hispanic
• U.S. citizen
• Full-time graduate student
• Studying in one of the eligible fields of study
• New student in the graduate program
• Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) from a bachelor’s degree

APPLICATION

To apply, students must submit the following:

• STEM Success Scholarship Application Form
• Resume
• Copies of all transcripts
• Personal essay that includes: Reason for choosing a STEM field of study for an advanced degree; Discussion of student’s strong interest or past involvement in research projects; Description of student’s financial need
• At least 2 letters of reference from faculty. Letters may be included in the packet or delivered separately by the recommender

Application packets are due by March 1, 2013 at 5 p.m.
