Yesterday June 16, 2014, Blackboard learn was unavailable to UTPA users  from 10:53pm – 11:57pm. Blackboard support was able to resolve the issue which caused the downtime. If you have any questions or concerns about this downtime, please contact our helpdesk at (956) 665-5327. Thank you.

UTPA Faculty, Staff and Students

On Friday June 13th at roughly around 9:00AM the University IT department put out a service announcement about an unplanned outage with the myUTPA portal found at http://my.utpa.edu.

During this period of time, several students were not able to login to Blackboard because of issues with their Active Directory credentials that are used when logging in to Blackboard directly.

Students who are experiencing these login issues are instructed to contact the IT HelpDesk  (956 665 2020) to resolve the password issues related to their active directory accounts. It is worth noting that the issues are not with Blackboard but with the users’ Active Directory accounts.

As of 1:30pm, the my.utpa.edu portal was fully operational and students were able to login to Blackboard in the conventional way.

Beginning at 4:00pm Wednesday, April 30, 2014, the main UTPA campus began experiencing intermittent internet connectivity issues. If you are a student whose Blackboard usage is or was affected by these connectivity issues, please contact our help desk at colthelp@utpa.edu or 956-665-5327. We will document the issue for future reference. Also, we suggest contacting your instructor to make them aware of your situation. We will post another update when the connectivity issues have been resolved.

3rd Annual Excellence in Online Teaching Conference

With the help of the College of Education Educational Technology Resource Center (ETRC), we have made available the recordings of the great presentations at our 3rd Annual Excellence in Online Teaching Conference. Enjoy the great keynote presentation by Dr. Charles “Chuck” Dziuban,   Director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Central Florida (UCF), and find out what great things your UTPA peers are doing to enhance the teaching and learning with technology in an online environment. The Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks, the premier journal of the Sloan Consortium is enhancing its focus with a newly articulated vision, mission, and expanded topics and themes of interest.  Please share this CFP with interested colleagues.

On behalf of the editorial board we issue a general call for proposals that align with our mission and meet the following criteria:

Format: Two formats of manuscripts are accepted:

  1. We welcome manuscripts that employ systematic investigation using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods approaches.  We also encourage the submission of integrative reviews of empirical research on topics in online education and as well as conceptual reviews.
  2. We also publish practitioner-based “lessons from the field” with reference to evidence brought to bear on significant issues, trends, and controversies.

Excellence in Online Learning COLTTie Recipient – Deborah Cole

The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding individual who has creatively utilized both asynchronous and synchronous learning approaches to online learning.  The recipient must have designed and taught one or more online courses with an imaginative approach, well-designed course materials and instructional strategies, and a demonstrated rapport with the course participants.  The recipient must also have demonstrated effectiveness in achieving desired learning outcomes in the online course(s).

This year’s recipient is Dr. Deborah Cole. Dr. Cole has taught different linguistics courses in the graduate and undergraduate level. She makes use of a wide variety of instructional approaches in the online learning environment to address students’  different learning styles. Dr. Cole has successfully incorporated technologies that effectively align with the Student Learning Outcomes. For instance, Dr. Cole has a project that uses the voice board tools for accent acquisition in her linguistic courses. She also incorporates language games using instructional technologies that promote and facilitate interaction and learning. Dr. Cole also uses group projects that drive students to develop their abilities to work collaboratively to present information clearly and accurately.

Innovation in Online Learning COLTTie Recipient – Andres Padilla-Oviedo

The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding individual whose innovative practices serve as a model for online learning. The recipient must have designed and taught one or more online courses utilizing the innovative approach. The recipient must have demonstrated how the innovative practice resulted in improving the overall effectiveness, efficiency and success of online learning, ultimately leading to improved student achievement.

This Year’s recipient is Professor Andres Padilla-Oviedo. Professor Padilla-Oviedo has developed an interdisciplinary class activity using challenge based instruction between students from Chemistry and Statistics students in an online setting. He has innovatively used additional instructional technologies such as KNEWTON and MyStatsLab that not only innovate, but most importantly enhance the teaching and learning environment by providing students the opportunity to interact with the course content and their own peers.

Blackboard Learn Management System is now available. The service was unavailable today, March 3, 2014 for approximately one hour from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.
